To be alive is a grand thing. {birthday picture post}

I have sometimes been wildly, despairingly, acutely miserable, racked with sorrow, but through it all I still know quite certainly that just to be alive is a grand thing.

- Agatha Christie

My Pastor used this quote from the great Agatha Christie in a sermon a couple of weeks ago. I thought it fitting for my birthday. Life is a grand thing and I'm grateful for it. It's not always easy (I have few complaints), but it's a gift that I don't take lightly. I am acutely aware of my numerous blessings...

...Blessings like my little peanut, who adores his big brother (the feeling is quite mutual).

...And this big-ham-of-a-4-year-old, who sports blonde hair and blue/green eyes like his daddy.

...Blessings like this funny dreamy man who I can't seem to get enough of. Best 7.5 years of my life.

...This *wonderful* family I married into...

....And the family I've been blessed to be apart of for 29 years.

I love my family so much and I'm grateful to be alive. For to be alive is a grand thing.

My favorite flower. The peony.

The peony is my favorite flower. They have always held a special place in my heart. For as long as I can remember, they've grown in my childhood backyard. My mom has a plant from the house I was born in, their current house - the house I grew up in - and a plant from my Great-Grandma. As kids, we would watch in awe as the ants crawled over the peony buds, almost willing them to open. It was a chore getting those little suckers off once the flowers were ready to be cut and brought into the house. But it was worth the effort.

My dad has always commented that the flowers smell like old lady perfume. Haha!  I still think of that when I bring the blooms up to my nose for a whiff of Spring. They're such a romantic flower. I wanted them for my bridal bouquet, but they had already stopped blooming by the time June 3rd rolled around. So sad.

Apartment living was dreary for me when it came to flowers. No lilacs, tulips or peonies. When we moved to our current house, I was …

We are His portion and He is our prize...

I've had this song in my head for a few days now. I love Kim Walkers voice and the passion that she portrays in this song. McMillan did a wonderful job in writing this song, the lyrics are so profound and encouraging and...different (the "sloppy wet kiss" part makes me smile). I especially love the first part of this song...

He is jealous for me,
Loves like a hurricane, I am a tree,
Bending beneath the weight of his wind and mercy.
When all of a sudden,
I am unaware of these afflictions eclipsed by glory,
And I realize just how beautiful You are,
And how great Your affections are for me.

Bending beneath the weight of his wind and mercy.

I am unaware of these afflictions eclipsed by glory,
And I realize just how beautiful You are,

And oh, how He loves us so,
Oh how He loves us,
How He loves us all

Yeah, He loves us,
Whoa! how He loves us,
Whoa! how He loves …

happy birthday, husband.

My husband celebrated his birthday on Wednesday. It was a very laid-back birthday (per his request). I didn't want his birthday to be boring and yet I wanted to respect his wishes. This year he bought his own present (something that he really wanted and only he could buy since I have no expertise in the world of hunting), so I knew gifts were going to be small and not *that* special.

I decided to go all out and make yummy food and treats and surprise him with those. I made cinnamon rolls the day before, hiding them in the refrigerator the next morning. The morning of his birthday, I snuck down, popped the chilled dough in the oven and made some coffee, sneaking back upstairs to get the baby up. The smell of them baking+the smell of the coffee brewing was intoxicating and a wonderful smell to wake up to. He was able to enjoy a hot roll right out of the oven with a cup of coffee before heading off to work. They were a yummy birthday treat and I think they were one of his favorite th…
